Bravery behind a mask: Scarred-for-life Italian beauty queen reveals how she felt her skin melt away when ‘her jilted boyfriend threw ACID in her face’

A former Miss Italy contestant may lose her sight and will have to have plastic surgery after acid was thrown in her face.
Gessica Notaro, who has worked as a TV presenter as well as a dolphin trainer, was allegedly attacked by her former boyfriend, who is accused of stalking her after she broke up with him.
Her ex, Jorge Edson Tavares, 29, denies carrying out the attack.

Former Miss Italy contestant Gessica Notaro is scarred for life after her jilted boyfriend Jorge Tavares allegedly threw acid in her face in January. Gessica, 28, spent two months imprisoned in her hospital room in Cesena, Rimini, being treated for her horrific injuries, after she was ambushed. She could only speak to visitors through a glass window. Her mother had to be sterilised before entering the room. Now, she faces a year-long wait until she is well enough for plastic surgery, spending £600 a month on medication, eye drops and lotions, to subdue her pain. Gessica, who still wears a protective face mask, bravely recalled the moment she looked in the mirror for the first time and felt relieved that, despite the scarring, she still recognised her face. Tavares, from Cape Verde, who denies the attack, is in jail in Italy awaiting trial.

Gessica, 28, pictured at an acquarium where she worked, alleges that her former boyfriend, bodyguard Jorge Tavares poured the corrosive liquid onto her face in January.
